Some of the local attractions in and around Camuscross and Isle Ornsay
The Sleat peninsula is Skye's most southern tip, an uncharacteristically fertile area that has earned it the sobriquet "The Garden of Skye". The Chalet is situated in the ultimate, unique and most idyllic setting surrounded by the natural beauty of ancient woodland, majestic mountains and breathtaking landscape, overlooking a necklace of seaweed-encrusted rocks and the mountains of the mainland on the horizon, the expansive panoramic sea views to Ben Sgreill and Loch Hourn across the sound of Sleat, and looking onto the very well known "Sandaig Island", the home of Gavin Maxwell, the author of "The ring of Bright Water".
The lighthouse, which was build by the late Robert Louis Stevenson's father, is on the tidal island of Isle Ornsay. When the tide is out, the bay completely dries out to sand, allowing you to escape to the lighthouse, where many people enjoy scrambling over the rock and the seaweed, collect shells on the way, to rest on the shore by the lighthouse and enjoy a picnic, listening to the sea birds, watching them duck and dive in the sea water.
It is not unusual to spot seals sunbathing on the rocks and porpoises popping up to say "hello" rising and falling in and out of the sea, peacefully listening to the sound of the waves, gently swaying against the rocks, mesmerized by the breathtaking, picturesque and dramatic views of unspoilt scenery unfolding before your eyes by the minute.
We invite you to share these very special moments of peaceful tranquility and seclusion that one finds hard to describe at times, with spectacular and uninterrupted sea views, gorgeous sunrises and glistening, magical moonlit nights reflecting in the smooth waters in the bay. This truly is a gateway to a unique and inspiring landscape. People return year after year, drawn by the astounding beauty of this unique historic, romantic and relaxing setting.
