Mrs Morag MacDonald, 2 Camuscross, Isle Ornsay, Sleat, Isle of Skye, IV43 8QS.    01471 833 758 or 01471 821 171

Location and Directions

The Chalet is situated in South Skye, 16 miles from the Skye Bridge, and approximately 4 to 6 hours by car from Edinburgh and Glasgow, and 2 hours from Inverness, although the journey itself is so spectacular you will probably want to take a whole day in arriving!

The chalet is delightfully served by a single-track village road, about a mile from the main Armadale to Broadford road, which has recently been upgraded, now with high quality double track and pavements.

It is easy to get to Isle Ornsay via the Skye Bridge or via the Mallaig-Armadale ferry crossing, and Camuscross is the neighbouring village of Isle Ornsay. There are also local buses linking Armadale and Broadford.

Directions from Fort William to the Skye Bridge

Leave Fort William on the A82 for Spean Bridge. Continue on the A82 at Spean Bridge and along Loch Lochy. At Invergarry take the A87 junction on the left and follow the A87 turning left at Cluanie (signposted Skye Bridge). Continue on the A87 through Glen Shiel, Dornie, and Balmacara (Reraig) until you reach Kyle of Lochalsh (for the Skye Bridge). (You can also go via the Mallaig-Armadale ferry from Fort William - see below).

Directions from Inverness to the Skye Bridge

Take the A82 from Inverness to Drumnadrochit, continue on the A82 to Invermoriston where you turn right onto the A87. Continue on the A87 through Glen Shiel, Dornie and Balmacara (Reraig) until you reach Kyle of Lochalsh (for the Skye Bridge).

Directions from the Skye Bridge

Follow the A87 off the Skye Bridge, turning right at the roundabout. Head towards Broadford. After about 6 miles you will pass through the settlements of Ashaig, Breakish and Skulamus, a 2 mile stretch. As you near Broadford you will see a sign for the A851 on your left for Armadale, Eilean Iarmain (Isle Ornsay) and Sabhal Mor Ostaig - the Gaelic college. Take this turning and continue along the road for about 8 miles, passing Duisdale Hotel on your right. About a mile after Duisdale Hotel you will see a turning on your left to Isle Ornsay.

Directions from the main road

There are a number of signs on the main road at the mouth of the opening to turn down to your left towards Isle Ornsay and Eileen Iarmain Hotel. You will go over a small grey humped back bridge, and approximately 200 yards on from there you will see the sign for Camuscross to your right. The telephone kiosk is what to look out for, turn right into Camuscross, climb the first small brae, and at the top of the brae the chalet is to your left down by the sea front.

Directions from the Mallaig - Armadale Ferry

Leave Fort William area and take the A830 until you arrive at the Mallaig ferry terminal. The crossing to Armadale on Skye only takes about 15 minutes. After you leave the ferry take the main road A851 north towards Broadford. After about 5 miles you will pass the Toravaig Hotel on your right. Continue on past the hotel through some open countryside for about 2 or 3 miles, and you will see a junction on your right to Isle Ornsay. From there the directions are as above.

By Rail

There is a train service between Inverness and Kyle of Lochalsh. Arrive into Kyle railway station from Inverness. Assuming that you will have arranged a self drive car perhaps, head for the Skye Bridge, which is only a mile and a half from the railway station, and follow the same directions for the crossing of the Skye Bridge. There are also buses to Broadford from Kyle of Lochalsh, from where you can change onto the Armadale bus.

Alternatively you can also use the railway from Fort William to get to Mallaig for the Mallaig-Armadale Ferry. However, it is important to allow enough time to make the connection for the last ferry if you use this route.

By Aeroplane

Fly into Inverness and follow the directions from Inverness to the Skye Bridge.

Map of the Area

Below is a map showing how to get to the chalet from within Skye. Please note that if you zoom in we have not yet centred the marker totally accurately on the chalet itself. Use the plus and minus controls at the top left of the map to zoom in and out, and the arrows to move the map north, south, east and west. You can also re-orient the map by holding your left mouse button down over the map, and moving the mouse around. It's fun also to look at the satellite photograph!
